Manager toolkit: leading career conversations

Hi Preferred First Name,

We're launching career paths at Forward on launch date. Your team will be encouraged to bring questions to their 1:1s with you, so here's a guide to help.

Before the launch

  • Review the career paths for the roles on your team: career paths link
  • Note where each person sits today and what the next step could look like.

A simple career conversation

  1. Where are you now? What do you enjoy most about your role? What drains you?
  2. Where do you want to go? In one to two years, what would you like to be doing?
  3. What's the gap? Which skills or experiences would get you there?
  4. What's the plan? Agree on one or two actions: a stretch project, Learning Loop, Forward Fellows, a mentor.

Good to know

  • Career growth isn't only up. Lateral moves build valuable experience too.
  • You don't need all the answers. Your PBP can help with specific questions about levels and moves.
  • Follow up. Revisit the plan in a month.
